His mother, Marie Françoise de Pesnel who died when Charles de Secondat was seven, was a female inheritor of a large financial heritage who brought the title of barony of La Brède to the Secondat family. As a young man, he studied Latin, French, history, and the law in advance graduating from the University of Bordeaux in 1708.
